FAQ

What is a Podiatrist?
A podiatrist or Doctor of Podiatric Medicine is a specialist who deals with the disorders of the foot. Pathological conditions and deformities of the foot result in pain and discomfort. These conditions are most often treated through medical and surgical means.

How long do you have to go to school to be a podiatrist?
A long time. First, successfully complete High School. Then 4 years of undergraduate study at a college or university resulting in a BA or BS. Then successful completion of the MCAT examination. Matriculation into one of 7 schools of Podiatric Medicine. The course of study in Podiatric medicine is 4 more years. The curriculum is focused on basic science, gross anatomy, lower extremity anatomy, and clinical medicine. The 3rd and 4th years are more focused on the podiatry specialty with more clinical rotations and direct patient care. That is 8 years past high school if you are counting. Then Once a Podiatrist has completed their formal education they do post- graduate education in the form of a residency. The residency can be 1, 2 or 3 years in duration and are geared toward teaching the surgical treatment of the foot.

Why did you become a Podiatrist?
I was always interested in medicine. As a High school student growing up in Philadelphia I worked as a Hospital volunteer which gave me exposure to the health care professions. This later led to a job at the same hospital. That job gave me the opportunity to observe various medical and surgical specialties. There I realized that I wanted a career in medicine and desired a profession that would permit me to earn a good living and allow time to spend with my family. Podiatry seemed to be the best choice for me to achieve those goals.

Where do I find information on choosing a career as a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine?
